Descendants of Richard Gilbert

Generation No. 1

     1.  Richard1 Gilbert1 was born Abt. 1550 in Yardley, Worcester, England, and died Abt. April 08, 1626 in Yardley, Worcester, England.  He married Margery Morken1 June 25, 1575 in Yardley, Worcester, England.  She died Unknown.

Notes for Richard Gilbert:

The parents of Margery Morken are also unknown. There are no other Morken entries in the Yardley parish registers, none in the Worcester probate index and none in the 1603 subsidy rolls for northern Worcestershire (John Amphlett, Lay Subsidy Roll A.D. 1603 for the County of Worcester[Oxford 1901]). Further search for Margery should center on nearby parishes across the border in Warwickshire or Staffordshire. There is no burial in Yardley for Margery under the Gilbert surname, nor have probate records in the Consistory Court of Worcester or the Prerogative Court of Canterbury been found for either of them.

There is a bit of indecision as to if Lydia was the spouse or mother of Thomas Gilbert.  I feel, based on the information I've read that she was his wife.  I leave this to the reader to decide based on their own research.

Lydia Gilbert of Windsor was condemned to death for witchcraft at a court session which began on 28 Nov. 1654 (Records of the Particular Court of Connecticut, 1639 [Hartford 1928] p. 131):

Notes for Henry Gilbert:

He took the oath of allegiance at Springfield Jan. 1, 1678, at the same time as his brother Thomas Gilbert did. He lived in Springfield until 1689 or 1690. His three oldest children were born there. He was a hayward for the Longmeadow district for several years. He was perhaps living on the grant given to him in 1679, said to have been in the present Enfield, Conn., then a part of Springfield.

He was a soldier and was sent to command a squad of men, among whomwas his brother Thomas, who was a builder or carpenter, to build a fort or blockhouse at Quabaug (Brookfield), starting Sept. 16, 1688. It was called Gilbert's Fort, perhaps because he took a house lot and lived adjoining it on the west, on the south side of the road. The fort was on the (later) schoolhouse lot in Brookfield, at the intersection of North Main and Maple Streets, of convenient size, having barracks for soldiers and their families and was surrounded by a stockade. It was a defense against Indian attacks from the northward, northwestward and northeastward.

Note: From History of North Brookfield, in 1688 Henry Gilbert commanded a scouting troop sent by Pynchon during King Phillip's War. He built "Gilbert's Fort" a fort of considerable size with barracks for soldiers and families surrounded by a stockade.

Notes for Charles Fox:

Charles Fox was born in Ireland in 1814.  Book A, Alien Reports of St. Lawrence County, New York State contains data showing he applied for Naturalization as a U.S. citizen on 12 February 1840.  Personal information in the report indicates he was born in Ireland C. 1815 and had an occupation as a farmer in 1840.  Charles had arrived in the U.S. in 1827, when he would have been about twelve.  The report has a column titled "When Admitted (as a citizen)," but only a check mark is in the appropriate column rather than a specific date.  The check mark is probably an entry to repeat a date immediately above, which date was 17 September, 1844.

Since non-native minor children became citizens when their parents were naturalized, it would appear that:

A.    Charles' parents did not opt for naturalization after emigration, or

B.     Charles may have emigrated from Ireland to the U.S. by himself, or with other unknown family members.

A wide-ranging search has, to date, failed to surface more information on Charles' emigration.  The reader should understand most immigrant arrival records are in no way complete.  Further, if Irish citizens wished to emigrate to Canada, there were no prohibitions against this in the early 1800s.  And once in Canada, only the St. Lawrence river had to be crossed before landing in New York State.  Certainly few records were kept of such events.  Though it is not at all clear Charles came to St. Lawrence County from Canada, this is a possibility.

The only other record in hand regarding Charles Fox is the 1850 U. S. Census Report for New York State, St. Lawrence County, Norfolk Township, Page 298, Entry 12, Family 109. This shows Charles, aged 36 from Ireland and Amanda, aged 28 from New York.  Also shown are William, aged 4 and Ozias Fox, aged one both being listed as from New York.

From other family records, it is known Charles and Amanda had other children, i.e.,  Hiram, born1851 at Raymondville, NY, in the Norfolk Township.  Daughters Kathleen and Clara were born to the couple, but other specifics for them we do not know.

Notes for Elizabeth F Baldwin:

Obituary of Elizabeth Baldwin, Wichita Beacon, Wichita, Kansas (January 14, 1935)

Mrs. Elizabeth Fox Claimed by Death in Wichita Sunday

Mrs. Elizabeth Fox, 76, died Sunday at 3:15 a.m. following a short illness.

Her death occurred before her son, J. Leslie Fox, formerly manager of radio station DFH but now with station WJR of Cleveland could reach her bedside.  He hurried toward Wichita by plane when his mother's condition became critical.  The plan was due at 2:15 a.m. but did not reach here until 4:30 a.m. owing to bad weather en route.

Mrs. Fox had resided here for the past 30 years.  She was the widow of the late Hiram D. Fox, formerly with the city engineering department.  She was born in West Branch, Iowa.  During her long residence in Wichita, she had made many close friends and was widely known and liked by everyone who had made her acquaintance.

Three Sons Survive

In addition to her son of Cleveland, she is survived by two other sons, Raymond G., Tucson, Ariz., and Norman G., Tullos, La.  They were en route to Wichita by train Sunday.

Funeral services will be held at the Gill mortuary Monday at 1:30 p.m. Dr. C.O. Whitely of University Friends church will officiate.  Burial will be in College Hill Memorial Lawns cemetery.

J. Leslie Fox was one of the radio pioneers of Wichita.  He helped found KFH and remained with the station until long after it became a part of the Columbia chain.  He left Wichita a few years ago to join the staff of a station at Nashville and from there went to Cleveland where he is advertising manager for WJR, one of the best known stations in the county.
